Aetiology: Psychological Factors

چکیده
AETIOLOGY: PSYCHOLOGICAL FACTORS The authors mention that significant psychological symptoms prevail in IBS, particularly among patients referred to gastroenterology clinics. It is true that studies have shown that 54%–94% of patients seen in tertiary referral centres meet the criteria for at least one primary psychiatric disorder. However, only 25%–30% of patients with IBS actually seek care, and of those, fewer than 1% are referred to specialists. 4 One study estimates that, in the community setting, the percentage of IBS patients with comorbid psychiatric disturbances is approximately 18%. Furthermore, psychiatric disorders have not been shown to be pathogenic for IBS.

Bruxism is a controversial phenomenon. Both its definition and the diagnostic procedure contribute to the fact that the literature about the aetiology of this disorder is difficult to interpret. There is, however, consensus about the multifactorial nature of the aetiology. Besides peripheral (morphological) factors, central (pathophysiological and psychological) factors can be distinguished. In...

This paper, a follow-up to one on Jung's theories of aetiology and symptom formation in schizophrenia (Journal of Analytical Psychology, 59, 1) reviews Ju...
متن کاملThe aetiology of post-traumatic stress following childbirth: a meta-analysis and theoretical framework.
There is evidence that 3.17% of women report post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after childbirth. This meta-analysis synthesizes research on vulnerability and risk factors for birth-related PTSD and refines a diathesis-stress model of its aetiology. Systematic searches were carried out on PsycINFO, PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science using PTSD terms crossed with childbirth terms. Studies were...
متن کاملAetiology of depression and schizophrenia: current views of British psychiatrists
RESULTS Genetics, biochemical abnormalities and substance misuse were considered important factors in both illnesses. Beyond that, psychiatrists varied widely in their views. Depression was viewed as a more multifactorial condition with psychological/social factors more important, whereas biological factors were considered more important in schizophrenia. Aetiological factors were thought to va...
